Jakub Mensik is into his first Masters 1000 final after edging past Taylor Fritz 7-6(4) 4-6 7-6(4) at the Miami Open.
The Czech Republican is the first from his country to reach a Masters 1000 final since Tomas Berdych in 2015 after edging past the world number four in two and a half hours.
Mensik produced 25 aces as he continued his incredible run in Miami and created a new landmark achievement.
The 19 year-old is also the third lowest ranked finalist in the tournament’s history and is the third youngest Miami Open finalist in history behind Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz.
Now a date with destiny awaits Mensik as he faces his idol Novak Djokovic for a second time in his career after losing to Djokovic in Shanghai last year.
Ahead of the spectacle Mensik is looking forward to facing his idol in the biggest match of his career so far, “It feels incredible. For me it was a dream to play against him in Shanghai,” Mensik told the ATP website.
“For now it’s a bit different. I am a better player now and I’m going to enjoy and it’s going to be really exciting. Let’s see what’s going to happen Sunday.”
In last year’s meeting Mensik won the opening set before losing in three sets as he will aim to deny Djokovic of a 100th career title.
The final is set to take place on Sunday afternoon local time.
