Alejandro Davidovich Fokina battled past Denis Shapovalov in two tiebreaks to reach the Acapulco final.

It has been an incredible week for the Spaniard who was on the brink of elimination in his opening round match but now finds himself in the final in Mexico.

After saving four match points against Mattia Bellucci in his first round match, Davidovich Fokina has since beaten Frances Tiafoe, Rodrigo Pacheco Mendez and now Denis Shapovalov in order to reach the final.

A win in two tiebreaks means Davidovich Fokina continues his good form although the match was very tight, “The match was so tight,” the Spaniard told the ATP website.

“The first set maybe he deserved it more. The second set I deserved it maybe. But at the end I didn’t lose the fight against him because I was ready for everything at the end. It’s not every day I’m in the semi-finals of [an ATP] 500. I’m very happy how I fought back for the first set and how I continued in the second set. It was not easy when he came back.”

Now Davidovich Fokina will face Tomas Machac in the final after the Czech Republican defeated Brandon Nakashima 6-4 1-6 6-4 to reach his maiden ATP 500 final.

Machac currently leads the head-to-head 1-0 as there will be a new winner of the title in Acapulco.
