Daniil Medvedev’s day in Dubai was one to forget as he lost to Tallon Griekspoor 2-6 7-6(7) 7-5 in the quarter-finals.
Medvedev had four match points and was in control of most of the contest but ended up wasting his chanced during his defeat to the Dutchman.
It was a better performance but Medvedev is still low on confidence as he is still yet to reach a semi-final this season.
However, it’s not just the defeat that will take the headlines as Medvedev also had a bone to pick with the umpire.
During the contest Medvedev received an unsportsmanlike conduct from umpire Adel Nour with the world number six accusing him over ‘double standards,’ “You’re very soft huh? Very soft. What is this, double standards against Russians?” claimed Medvedev according to tennis infinity.
“Don’t say something like this. Daniil, I’m very fair! I treat you all exactly the same,” Nour responded.
It’s unclear what the conduct was for but it’s clear that Medvedev felt it was a personal attack.
However as for Griekspoor it was a victory to savour as he moved into the semi-finals, “I’m super happy with this win,” Griekspoor said according to the Associated Press.
“Daniil is an unbelievable player, an unbelievable competitor. He’s been at the top of the rankings for so many years, so I’m very pleased with this win. I was a little bit lucky on the match points down, and in the second-set tie-break. I even needed a few match points myself to finish this one off.”
Griekspoor will now play Stefanos Tsitsipas or Matteo Berrettini in the last four while Quentin Halys will face Felix Auger-Aliassime in the other semi-final.
