Daniil Medvedev has confirmed he is no longer working with Gilles Simon after the two decided to go their own ways.
The former world No.1 hired Simon just under a year ago to work alongside him and his long-term coach Gilles Cervara. During this period, the Russian only reached one Tour final, which was in Indian Wells last March. Last year was the first time Medvedev didn’t win an ATP title of any sort in a season since 2017.
“It was honestly a good experience,” Medvedev told reporters in Rotterdam. “There were a lot of good things me and Gilles [Cervara] can take going forward. It just didn’t work out exactly the way we wanted in terms of results.”
Medvedev will continue being coached by Cervara, who has been his full-time mentor since the summer of 2017. The Frenchman was named ATP Coach of the Year in 2019 and made the shortlist the following two years.
Meanwhile, Simon says he has ‘only good memories‘ of his time working in Medvedev’s team. The 40-year-old won 14 ATP titles during his career and reached a ranking high of sixth in 2009.
“A big thank you to Daniil and to the whole team for this year spent together,” Simon wrote on Instagram. “It was a great experience, very interesting, and I will only have good memories of it. I wish you all the best for the future and above all to achieve your goals!”
Medvedev started his 2025 campaign at the Australian Open where he crashed out in the second round. In his opening match, he needed five sets to beat Thai wild card Kasidit Samrej who is ranked out of the top 400. Then in the second round, he suffered a shock five-set loss to American teenager Learner Tien.
Medvedev will return to action this week at the Rotterdam Open where he will play Stan Wawrinka in his opening match. He is currently ranked seventh in the PIF ATP rankings.
