Mirra Andreeva was in clinical form at the Brisbane International on Thursday, where she dropped only three games en route to the quarter-finals.
The Russian eighth seed stormed past Linda Noskova 6-3, 6-0, in just over an hour, winning 10 out of the last 11 games played in the match. Andreeva saved all four break points she faced and won 70% of her service points. The victory is sweet revenge for the 17-year-old who lost to Noskova at the same tournament 12 months ago.
“I’m really happy to be back in the quarterfinals here,” said Andreeva. “Last year she almost killed me in the quarter-finals. I was thinking it’s time to take my revenge.”
Despite her young age, Andreeva already has one WTA title to her name and reached the semi-finals at the French Open last year. She is currently ranked 16th in the world and is the youngest player in the WTA top 50.
“My number one goal for 2025 is to crack the top 10,” she states.
“So I’m just gonna do my best for this starting in Brisbane, from the first tournament of the season. I’m just gonna do my best and see if we can achieve this goal.”
Conchita Marinez, a former Wimbledon champion and former coach of Gabine Muguruza, is overseeing her progress on the Tour. Martinez won 33 WTA titles during her career.
“Thanks to Conchita. She helped me improve so thanks to her,” Andreeva said of her mentor.
“I know sometimes it’s not easy to work with me. I think she’s doing a good job so far. Sometimes could be better… but she’s ok!”
Next up for the Russian in Brisbane will be a clash against Ons Jabeur who ousted Elina Avanesyan 6-4, 1-6, 6-4, in her third round match. Jabeur is playing in her first tournament since the US Open after ending her 2024 early due to a shoulder injury.
Also through to the quarter-finals is Czech Republic’s Marie Bouzkova, who produced a 6-4, 6-4, win over world No.20 Victoria Azarenka. She could play Aryna Sabalenka in the next round if the top seed wins her match against Yulia Putintseva which will take place later today.
The winner of this year’s Brisbane International will receive $192,475 in prize money and 500 ranking points.
