Naomi Osaka is ‘optimistic’ at her chances of competing at the Australian Open ahead of a last minute MRI scan.

The former world number one started the season very well by reaching the final at the ASB Classic in Auckland.

However the tournament could have been even better for her as she took the opening set against Clara Tauson in the final before withdrawing due to an abdomen injury.

Last week’s injury was a reminder to Osaka that the journey to reclaiming her former glories with be a long and difficult one.

Despite the injury Osaka has stated that she is optimistic about her Australian Open participation hopes as she gave a brief update, “I’m having an MRI today to assess,” Osaka was quoted by ESPN as saying in a short statement.

“I don’t feel that it’s too serious and I still feel very optimistic about AO.”

Should Osaka compete in Melbourne, the Japanese star will be bidding for her third Australian Open title.

Osaka’s return to the tour has been a successful one though and that was shown in the recent rankings when she reached the world’s top 50 and will aim to climb even further with a deep run in Melbourne.

The Australian Open starts on Sunday with the draw taking place on Thursday afternoon local time.
