Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova and former Australian Open champion Caroline Wozniacki have withdrawn from the first Grand Slam of the season in Melbourne.
A back injury has prevented Krejcikova from competing in Melbourne despite a positive end to last season.
The Wimbledon champion reached the semi-finals at the WTA Finals and was playing some impressive tennis.
However Krejcikova has had to withdraw from the first Grand Slam of the season and had this to say on social media, “I wanted to share a quick update regarding my withdrawal from the Australian Open. Unfortunately, my back injury, which troubled me at the end of last season, is still not fully healed,” Krejcikova said on X.
“It’s really disappointing because I love playing in Melbourne and have such great memories from reaching the quarterfinals last year. Thanks to all of you for your support. I’m working hard to get back to full health, and I can’t wait to see you on the court soon!”
Krejcikova is not the only high-profile withdrawal as former champion Caroline Wozniacki has also withdrawn.
The Dane has not been seen on court since her fourth round exit to Beatriz Haddad Maia at the US Open and fans continue to wonder if she will continue her tennis career.
It has been rumoured by the Danish media that Wozniacki is considering stopping her career again although there is yet to be confirmation of this.
Yulia Starodubtseva has replaced Wozniacki in the draw at the Australian Open which starts next Sunday.
