Alexander Zverev says he is open to working with tennis great Boris Becker in the future as long as one key requirement is met.

The world No.2 has previously worked with the likes of David Ferrer, Ivan Lendl and Juan Carlos Ferrero during various stages of his career. Although the person who has predominately coached Zverev is his father Alexander Sr. During an interview with Germany’s Tennis Magazine, the tennis star speaks positively about his time with Ferrer and Ferrero but the same can’t be said about Lendl.

“He got a new dog and was showing him how to go to the toilet. That was really his main topic. And golf.” Zverev said of his time with Lendl.

Looking ahead, the 27-year-old isn’t ruling out the possibility of working with another former player with six-time Grand Slam champion Becker near the top of that list. Becker has previously coached Novak Djokovic and Holger Rune. Between those two jobs, he was imprisoned for eight months in the UK for hiding £2.5m worth of assets and loans to avoid paying debts. Due to that conviction, there is uncertainty about his ability to travel to certain parts of the world.

“I love Boris and I also believe that he has incredible knowledge of tennis. But I don’t know how he travels. That’s the only question mark,” said Zverev.

“As soon as he has solved that and clarified it, we can talk about it. We are always in contact with him and talk to each other often. Now for  Australia, it will stay as it is and then I’ll see.”

Zverev has experienced a strong 2024 season which has seen him produce a win-loss record of 69-21. He won two masters titles in Rome and Paris, as well as finishing runner-up to Carlos Alcaraz at the French Open. Zverev is the only player to reach the last 16 of all nine Masters events in 2024. The last player to achieve this was Rafael Nadal seven years ago. Despite his success, the German is yet to claim a major title or reach the top of the ATP rankings.

“I played some fantastic matches,” he told reporters in Turin last month.  “It’s been an interesting year for me, especially after the (ankle) injury. It was kind of my first year completely back competing at this level and competing for big tournaments.

“But what stays in mind are the tough losses that you had. What will stay in my mind is the Australian Open loss against Daniil (Medvedev), and the French Open final against Carlos (Alcaraz). Those are the matches that stay in my mind.

“I’m going to do everything I can to be back in the same moments, in the same position next year. I’m going to do everything I can to win.”

Zverev will begin his 2025 season at the United Cup, which will get underway on December 27th.
