Jannik Sinner overcame a second set blip to dump Daniil Medvedev out of the Nitto ATP Finals with a 6-3 6-4 victory.
Despite being broken in the second set, the world number one confirmed his place as group winner with a straight sets win.
The victory means that he will play the runner-up of the other group on Saturday while Daniil Medvedev is out of the tournament.
Joining Sinner in the semi-finals is Taylor Fritz, who is likely to play Alexander Zverev in the last four.
It was a high-quality start to the match as Medvedev served with authority, cruising to a couple of efficient holds of serve.
Unfortunately for Medvedev, Sinner responded with just much as confidence as he worked the forehand well and also held serve emphatically.
The world number one was persistent on return in the latter stages of the set creating three break points.
Although the Italian was unable to break Medvedev’s clutch serving in the sixth game, Sinner eventually broke with ease in the eighth game to create a 5-3 lead.
Sinner held to love in his last two service games with the top seed taking the first 6-3 and Medvedev having lots of work to do.
The task got even bigger for Medvedev as he was broken easily in the third game with the world number four unable to sustain a period of consistency with his backhand letting him down.
However Medvedev’s motivation was strong for this match as he needed to win in order to qualify for the semi-finals.
That showed in the sixth game as he capitalised on a lapse of concentration from Sinner and broke back for 3-3.
A hold to love put Medvedev into a 4-3 lead as Sinner had work to do with Medvedev gaining more and more confidence on serve.
There was no problems for Sinner though as he broke Medvedev’s resistance with a break in the ninth game before fending off a late surge from the fourth seed to claim victory.
It means Sinner has won all three of his group matches and could end the week as an undefeated champion.
Meanwhile Medvedev’s season is now over as Taylor Fritz will move into the semi-finals.
