Jannik Sinner has revealed his emotions and praised his consistency after receiving the year-end world number one trophy.
Sinner became the first Italian to receive the trophy as he lifted it up in front of his home crowd in Turin on Monday.
After receiving the award from ATP CEO Andrea Gaudenzi and former world number one Boris Becker Sinner revealed how he felt to achieve the feat, “It’s a nice feeling, [it is] special sharing these kinds of moments here in Italy with the crowd,” Sinner explained to the ATP website.
“This would not be possible without all the people I have around and especially these kind of people I want to keep forever, because it has a journey from the beginning. I just heard that my mom was crying, which is something very cute. Only they know from my early age and stages, when I was around 13, how many sacrifices we made as a family.
“Now I’m standing here with one of the, maybe the most special trophy I have.”
Sinner’s season includes winning seven titles which two of them were Grand Slams as he won the Australian Open and US Open.
The Italian became the 19th player to be year-end world number one and the fourth active player to do so.
For Sinner consistency is the key to this award and holds the honour in high regard, “It’s a great competition between this and Grand Slams,” Sinner told the ATP website.
“This is a very consistent trophy. You have to play one year very consistent tennis, so this is for sure a very, very tough trophy to get.”
Sinner will aim to win his eighth title at the ATP Finals and continues his bid in Turin against Taylor Fritz on Tuesday evening.
