Emil Ruusuvuori has announced that he has ended his season early as he prioritises looking after his physical and mental health.
The tennis player from Finland was due to play Alexander Zverev in the opening round of the US Open before withdrawing at the last minute.
It has been a difficult season who is currently at 85 in the world with his career high ranking being at 37 which he achieved in March last year.
However Ruusuvuori’s poor season has forced the 25 year-old to shut down his season early as he looks to prioritize his physical and mental health.
Announcing the news on Twitter(X), Ruusuvuori said he would be missing Finland’s Davis Cup tie but will be there to support the team, “As you know, the past year has been challenging: I have achieved things I have dreamed of since I was a child, but the balance between work and recovery has not been right,” Ruusuvuori explained in his statement.
“Due to overloading, I have decided to take a break from tennis for the rest of the year and focus on my physical and mental health. Because of this, I will not be in the playing lineup for the Davis Cup. However, I will still support the team and be with them, as the DC team is extremely important to me.”
Ruusuvuori is only defending 55 points between now and the end of the season so the Fin’s ranking won’t drop too far down as he aims to back healthy for the Australian Open in January.
