Alexander Zverev beat Holger Rune 6-3 7-6 (7-5) to reach the quarter final at the Omnium Banque National presenté par Rogers in Montreal for the fourth time in his career.
Zverev won 52% of points of points on Rune’s second serve to take a 2-1 lead in his three head-to-head matches against Rune. In their first match Rune beat Zverev in Munich 2022. Zverev beat Rune in the fourth round at this year’s Roland Garros.
Zverev converted his second break point in the third game of the first set to take a 2-1 lead. Rune earned two break- back points in the eighth game but Zverev saved them with a forehand volley. Zverev earned his second break in the ninth game to win the first 6-3.
Zverev broke serve in the eighth game to take a 5-3 lead. Rune pulled back on serve at 15 as Zverev was serving for the match.
Zverev earned two mini-breaks to take a 6-2 lead. Rune saved four match points before Zverev sealed the tie-break 7-5. Zverev has reached his 29th Masters 1000 quarter final.
Zverev set up a quarter final against Sebastian Korda, who received a walkover, after Casper Ruud withdrew from the match due to illness.
Matteo Arnaldi beat Kei Nishikori 6-4 7-5 to reach the first Masters 1000 semifinal of his career. Arnaldi set up a match against Andrey Rublev, who beat Jannik Sinner in the quarter final.
Nishikori saved a break point in the fourth game before breaking serve in the fifth game to take a 3-2 lead. Arnaldi pulled back on serve in the sixth game to draw level to 3-3. Arnaldi earned his second break in the 10th game to seal the first set 6-4.
Arnaldi saved two break points in the second game of the second set. Nishikori broke back in the fifth game and saved three break points to hold serve for 3-3. Arnaldi broke again in the 12th game on his first match point.
