Hubert Hurkacz has kept his Nitto ATP Finals hopes alive with a 6-4 3-6 7-6(5) victory over Ugo Humbert in Basel.
The Pole’s search for a third title of the year survived a tough test against the Frenchman as he held his nerve to reach the Swiss Indoors final.
Hurkacz failed to serve out the match at 5-3 but kept his cool in the final set tiebreak to reach the final in Basel.
As a result of his win Hubert Hurkacz has overtaken Taylor Fritz in the race to Turin and is now just 215 points behind Holger Rune.
Despite what’s at stake over the next week Hurkacz is not thinking about Turin too much, “I try to shut down the noise and do my job, because ultimately if you can do that then you give yourself the best chance,” Hurkacz told the ATP website.
Now Hurkacz will look to win the title and can close the gap between him and Rune to just 15 points heading into the Masters 1000 title in Paris next week.
That’s because Rune failed to win his semi-final as he lost to a revived Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-3 6-2.
The Canadian was in dire form heading into this year’s tournament but has produced some of his best tennis to reach his first final since last year’s Basel event.
Auger-Aliassime heads into tomorrow’s final with a 2-1 head-to-head lead over Hurkacz as he looks to defend his title in Switzerland.
