Coco Gauff has ended Caroline Wozniacki’s comeback run at the US Open with a 6-3 3-6 6-1 victory to secure a place in the quarter-finals.
The American is into the last eight after producing a dominant last set against the former Australian Open champion.
Now Gauff will await either defending champion Iga Swiatek or Jelena Ostapenko in the quarter-finals on Tuesday.
Despite the dominant ending to the match, Gauff didn’t have it all her own way as Wozniacki started the match more consistently as she took a 2-0 lead.
However Gauff would come back with some aggressive and precise tennis of her own to win the next three games and take a 3-2 lead.
Both players produced bright spells for the rest of the set but Gauff was more aggressive when it mattered most as the American broke in the eighth game to love.
The Dane wasn’t about to surrender the opening set without a fight as she continued to problem solve and get one more ball back to the annoyance of the feisty Gauff.
In the end the world number six converted her third set point to claim the opening set 40 minutes.
The second set saw Gauff under severe pressure as Wozniacki posed more questions on return which the American had no real answer to.
Wozniacki created at least one break point in every return game as the former world number one converted her sixth break point to take a 5-3 lead.
A composed service game saw Wozniacki level this match at one set all with Gauff leaving the court to do some reflecting.
Another break at the start of the deciding set lead people to believe whether Wozniacki was going to produce another dream result.
However it wasn’t to be for the Dane as she had very little energy to complete an incredible result.
Gauff was ruthless in her overall game as she picked apart Wozniacki’s game with the American winning the remaining six games to book her spot in the last eight.
Now the American stands three wins away from a historic, the question is has the world number six got the nerve to go all the way?
