Andy Murray admits he is hopeful of building momentum in Toronto ahead of his second round match.
The Brit overcame a brutal opening set to defeat Lorenzo Sonego 7-6(4) 6-0 in Toronto.
Murray produced stunning defensive shots to book a place in the second round in Canada, where he will face Max Purcell.
Now the Brit looks to build momentum heading into the US Open, where he went out in the third round to Matteo Berrettini last year.
Speaking after his win over Sonego, Murray admitted that the conditions are faster in Toronto than in Montreal as he is hoping to build some momentum in Canada this week, “The conditions here are very different to playing in Montreal. It’s always much faster here, it just takes time to get used to it,” Murray told the ATP website.
“Hopefully if I build some confidence and get through some matches, I believe I can play well on this court and in these conditions. Obviously, I’ve had success here in the past. It was a very long time ago, but I have good memories from this tournament. I love playing here and hopefully I can build a bit of momentum.”
Next for Murray will be Max Purcell, who defeated Felix Auger-Aliassime in straight sets.
Should Murray reach the third round then he will face either Berrettini or seventh seed Jannik Sinner before a potential quarter-final with Stefanos Tsitsipas.
