Miami Open Daily Preview: Daniil Medvedev Plays Jannik Sinner for the Men’s Championship

The men’s singles final will be played on Sunday in Miami, as well as the women’s doubles final.

Daniil Medvedev has reached his fifth consecutive final, and leads the tour 28 wins this season.  He is vying for his 19th title at his 19th different event, in his first final in Miami.

Jannik Sinner is 21-4 this season, and has advanced to his third hard court final within the last two months.  He is playing for his eighth career title, in his second final in Miami.

Also on Sunday, the women’s doubles championship match will be played, featuring four North Americans, as it’s Leylah Fernandez and Taylor Townsend vs. Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula (2).  Gauff and Pegula are 4-1 in finals, while this is only the second event as a team for Fernandez and Townsend.

Jannik Sinner (10) vs. Daniil Medvedev (4) – 1:00pm on Stadium

Medvedev has advanced rather comfortably to this championship match, losing only one set along the way, to Karen Khachanov in the semifinals.  Though it’s worth noting he received a walkover earlier in the tournament from an injured Alex Molcan.  Daniil had previously reached the quarterfinals of Miami in both of the last two years, but had not advanced farther.  He is 18-13 in career finals.

Sinner also advanced pretty comfortably to this stage, and like Medvedev, only dropped a set in his semifinal, which was another stellar matchup for the Italian against Carlos Alcaraz.  Jannik was the runner-up in Miami two years ago, when he lost to Hubert Hurkacz in straight sets.  He is 7-2 in career finals, but 0-1 at Masters 1000 events.

Their head-to-head was been one-way traffic, as Medvedev leads 5-0.  That includes another championship match just last month in Rotterdam, which Daniil won in three sets after dropping the first.  However, all five of those matches have taken place indoors.

Based on recent form, and their lopsided history, Medvedev should be favored on Sunday.  Since leaving Melbourne, Daniil has rediscovered his mojo, winning 23 of his last 24 matches.  He also possesses much more experience in big finals than Sinner.  And it’s a big ask for Jannik to hit through the suppressive court coverage of both Alcaraz and Medvedev in successive rounds.
