Max Purcell and Matthew Ebden seal decisive doubles win over France in Hamburg

Max Purcell and Matthew Ebden beat Nicholas Mahut and Arthur Rinderknech in the decisive doubles match to secure Australia a 2-1 win over France in Hamburg.

World number 79 Richard Gasquet beat Jason Kubler 6-2 6-4 at the Davis Cup by Rakuten Finals Group Stage. 

Gasquet broke twice in the first and seventh games to close out the first set 6-2. 

Gasquet converted his third break in the third game to take a 2-1 lead. Kubler broke straight back to draw level to 2-2. Gasquet earned his second break in the ninth game to take a 5-4 lead.

Kubler, won his first Davis Cup match against Zizou Bergs in the 3-0 win over Belgium, saved five match points before losing the match in straight sets. Kubler earned two break points in the 10th game, but Gasquet hit an ace down the T on the sixth match point.    

Alex De Minaur edged past Benjamin Bonzi 6-3 1-6 6-4 in 2 hours and 10 minutes to draw the tie level to 1-1. 

De Minaur broke twice in the second and sixth games to take a 5-1 lead. Bonzi pulled one break back at love in the seventh game for 2-5. Bonzi saved two break points to hold serve for 5-3. De Minaur served out the first set at deuce after saving a break point. 

Bonzi broke twice in the second and sixth games to seal the second set 6-3. The Frenchman broke serve in the third game and held his next service games to take a 4-2 lead. De Minaur won the final four games with two breaks of serve to seal the third set 6-4.   

Matthew Ebden and Max Purcell beat Nicolas Mahut and Arthur Rinderknech 6-4 6-4 in the decisive doubles match boosting the Australian hopes of reaching the Final 8. Purcell and Ebden won the men’s doubles title at Wimbledon. 

“Delivering on behalf of your nation in such tight matches, when it really matters, is what it is all about. I have been lucky to be around Davis Cup for 10 years now, while I have been known Lleyton Hewitt since I was 17”, said Ebden.
