Nick Kyrgios feels ‘super excited’ after the Australian defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas 5-7 6-2 6-4 to reach the Halle quarter-finals.

The Australian edged out the world number six in three sets to book his place in the last eight in Halle.

There was little to separate both players in the opening set as the server dominated play.

After being denied two set points in the tenth game, Tsitsipas ramped up the intensity and his level of play as he converted his fourth set point to take the opening set.

That didn’t faze Kyrgios though as he continued to outpower and outmuscle the Greek and he took his fifth break point to break at the start of the second set.

Kyrgios’ power mixed with placement was too much for Tsitsipas to handle as he secured a second break in the seventh game to break for 5-2 and seal the second set in his next service game.

In the deciding set both players saved two break points each as the pressure on return intensified.

Despite Tsitsipas’ impressive serving and groundstrokes, Kyrgios managed to power his way to a break in the ninth game and then the Australian closed out the match to love to secure a big win on the road to Wimbledon.

After the match Kyrgios admitted he was super excited to move on in Halle, “Stef is one of the best players in the world at the moment and he’s going to have some amazing results and I’m sure many, many Grand Slams,” Kyrgios told the ATP website.

“I don’t know if I can say the same for me, but I’m happy to still be able to produce this level with the many tournaments I play. It is a testament to how hard I do work when I’m not playing. I’m just super excited to move on as well, I want to keep having these big wins on the best courts in the world.”

Kyrgios seems to be playing consistent tennis on grass having reached the semi-finals in Stuttgart last week.

The Australian will play Pablo Carreno Busta in the quarter-finals on Friday after the Spaniard defeated Sebastian Korda 6-4 0-6 6-3.

Kyrgios said he is excited to take on Carreno Busta, “I’m excited. He’s a hell of a player and he can play on all surfaces. So I’m going to try and see what I can do, bump a couple of returns and serve big, and see how it goes,” the Australian said.

There were also wins on Wednesday for Hubert Hurkacz and Daniil Medvedev.
