Andy Murray believes tennis needs to move on from Novak Djokovic’s visa battle but also thinks that there are still unanswered questions.
Murray addressed the situation in his post-match press conference after a 6-3 6-1 win over Viktor Durasovic in Sydney.
After a convincing victory over the Norwegian qualifier, Murray gave his views on the situation of Novak Djokovic.
The world number one won his court battle over his Visa and his right to compete at next week’s Australian Open.
However the minister for Immigration still has the right to overall and deport the nine-time champion who has already been seen practicing at Rod Laver Arena.
Despite the scenario being unclear Murray believes, even though there are questions that need to be answered, Tennis needs to move on, “It’s positive that he’s not in detention anymore,” the Brit was quoted as saying by tennis365.
“Obviously he won in court, so, you know that’s a positive thing for him, hopefully he will be able to concentrate on the tennis now. I think there is still a few questions that need to be answered around the isolation and stuff, which I’m sure we’ll hear from him in the next few days.
“It’s the first match that I have played here or won here in over three years, and this is where situations like these are frustrating for players because I want to come off and talk about my tennis and what’s happening there, not talking about situations like that.
“So I’m hoping that we can move on from it now, it looks like he’s going to be able to play and compete in the Australian Open and we do want the best players there, but I think there is still a few questions to be answered – until that happens it’s tough to give a definitive opinion on everything.”
A decision on Djokovic’s status in Australia could be made on Wednesday before the draw for the Australian Open is conducted on Thursday.
As for Murray, his second round match will take place on Wednesday when he plays second seed Nikoloz Basilashvili at around 9:30am UK time.
