The Canadian started his Vienna campaign by beating the Lithuanian in straight sets.
Felix Auger Aliassime is into the second round of the Erste Bank Open in Vienna after beating Ricardas Berankis in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 in one hour and 34 minutes serving nine aces and winning 81% of his first-serve points.
The first set was pretty routine for the Montreal native and he managed to get the early break to take a 3-1 lead on his second break point of the game and that one break was enough for him to serve out the first set.
The world number 99 gave a little bit of a push back in the second set he managed to get the first break of the set to take a 2-1 lead with a stunning passing shot down the line.
The break of serve didn’t last long as the 21-year old broke right back the following game to put the set back on serve and broke Berankis serve the following game and was able to consolidate it.
At 4-2, Auger Aliassime was able to turn that break into a double break and was able to serve out the match to advance to the second round where he will face the winner of the match between Cameron Norrie and Marton Fucsovics.
Auger Aliassime and Fucsovics have met three previous times and the Canadian currently has a 2-1 lead with the most recent meeting happening this past summer in Cincinnati at the Western and Southern Open with the Montreal native winning in straight sets.
In regards to the potential matchup between the Canadian and Cameron Norrie, they have only met once before and that was back in 2019 in Indian Wells with the Canadian winning in straight sets as well.
This was the world’s number 12 first match since pulling out of the San Diego Open a month ago due to an adductor injury.
