Matteo Berrettini has revealed his excitement at making his Laver Cup debut this year.
The recent Wimbledon finalist was announced as the latest member of Team Europe after pushing Novak Djokovic all the way at SW19.
Berrettini will now join Roger Federer and Dominic Thiem as members of Team Europe as they take on Team World at the TD Garden in Boston in September.
Speaking of the news the Italian said he can’t wait for the challenge, “I’m really excited to be part of the Laver Cup this year,” Berrettini told the Laver Cup website.
“I’ve heard so much talk in the locker rooms from the guys that have played it before about what a cool event it is. Playing at TD Garden, having Bjorn Borg as my Captain, and being on the same team as one of my childhood idols, Roger Federer, is going to be a really special experience.”
Speaking on the news captain Borg was happy to see the Italian on his team and is looking forward to joining up with him later in the year, “Matteo has had an incredible run,” the Swede said.
“Not only on the grass courts this summer but really since the start of the year when he helped Italy reach the final of the ATP Cup in Melbourne and then reached the fourth round of the Australian Open and the quarter-finals at Roland Garros.
“He is a great addition to our team and I have no doubt he will relish the unique experience that Laver Cup provides as he teams up alongside his year-round rivals.“
The world number eight will look to bring Team Europe their fourth consecutive Laver Cup triumph after victories in Prague, Chicago and Geneva.
The event is expected to have a 100% capacity having been cancelled last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
More players will be announced at some time around the US Open as the fourth edition of the competition will take place from the 24th-26th of September.
As for Berrettini his focus will now be on the Olympics as he looks to bring back a medal for the Italian team.
