Ash Barty’s hopes of a medal in singles have gone after a stunning 6-4 6-3 defeat to Sara Sorribes Tormo.

The world number one clearly felt flustered from the heat and her Wimbledon run as she was well and truly beaten by the Spaniard.

Barty went down a double break in the opening set, conceding a 4-1 lead to the grinding Spaniard.

Despite conceding one of the breaks back and facing break point while serving for the opening set, Sorribes Tormo held on to take the first set.

Both players shared the breaks at the start of the second set as the world number one looked to improve her form in the second set.

It looked like the Wimbledon champion was revitalised in the second set as she had the chance to get a crucial break in the sixth game.

However she wasted two opportunities and was punished as Sorribes Tormo broke in two consecutive to seal the best victory of her career.

After the win Sorribes Tormo described the win as an incredible feeling, “It was incredible I don’t know what to say, I still have goosebumps. It’s amazing,” she said in her on-court interview.

“It’s the best victory in my career, for sure. Because of the place, for who she is, because of what the Olympics means to me and because of playing for Spain.

“The dream of my life was playing here. I still have the goosebumps. Winning against the No. 1… I don’t know how to describe it.”

Sorribes Tormo will now face Fiona Ferro in the second round as she looks to consolidate a carerr-best win.

As for the world number one it’s back to the drawing board after hitting 55 unforced errors in a match that she never really controlled.

Barty will look to win a medal in the doubles as she is into the second round with Storm Sanders in the Women’s doubles.

They will play Yi-Fan Xu and Zhaoxuan Yang of China in the next round.
