Denis Shapovalov reaches final in Geneva after beating Cuevas

Denis Shapovalov reached his third career ATP Final in Geneva.

The Canadian made his first final of the 2021 ATP season beating his Uruguayan opponent.

Denis Shapovalov booked his spot in Saturday final at the Gonet Open in Geneva beating the Uruguayan Pablo Cuevas in straight sets 6-4, 7-5 in one hour and 41 minutes.

The match didn’t get off to the start both players wanted as right after they had finished their warm ups the rain started to fall and the players left the court in anger but returned breifly and carried on.

The first four games of the match went with serve and at 2-2 the Toronto native would set up the first breakpoint of the match with his backhand and break the world number 102 to take an early lead.

At 4-3 the Salto, Uruguay resident had a chance to get back in the set and at the third time of asking managed to break the world number 15 to go back on serve at 4-4.

The number two seed at the tournament went right back to work and managed to break the 35 year old at love to regain his lead and served out the first set.

In the second set the Canadian kept pushing earning two breakpoints but the Uruguayan managed to save both and hold serve. He was forced to save another one at 1-1 and it stayed on serve until 3-2 when the world number 102 had a chance to break to take his first lead of the match and did just that.

Just like in the first set the world number 15 responded the very next game breaking right back and at 5-5 the Canadian managed to earn two more breakpoints with his backhand as he broke with a sublime backhand winner down the line.

He would serve out the match to set a date in the final with Casper Ruud of Norway who earlier in the day ended Pablo Andujar’s amazing run which included beating the great Roger Federer in the second round beating him 6-3, 6-2.
