This year’s Australian Open quarter finalist Tennys Sandgren came back from one set down to beat Felix Auger Aliassime 6-7 (4-7) 6-2 7-6 (7-5) in just under three hours at the Western and Southern Open in New York.
Sandgren was one game from defeat as Auger Aliassime was serving for the match at 5-4 in the third set, but Sandgren broke at love and sealed the win in the tie-break of the third set. Sandgren has reached the third round at an ATP Masters 1000 tournament for the first time.
The US player has won four of his five matches against top 20 players in 2020.
Sandgren will face either Novak Djokovic or qualifier Ricardas Berankis in the third round.
“Today was tough. We were both struggling a little bit, but you just try to be positive and hope it works out for you. It seems like the player who grabs the match by the reins in those later stages ends up getting the win”, said Sandgren.
