Simona Halep continued her winning run in 2020 after beating Irina-Camelia Begu 7-6(2) 6-3 to reach the Prague final,

Before WTA’s restart, Simona Halep was one of the last winners on the WTA Tour after claiming the title in Dubai.

Although some people thought the lockdown would have halted her progress, this has been far from the truth as she powered into the Prague final.

Converting all six of her break points, the top seed clinched her 14th win of the season and a place in tomorrow’s final in just over 90 minutes.

After the match, Halep expressed her happiness at reaching another WTA final, “I didn’t play my best tennis but also she was tired, so in my opinion, it was a good match,” Halep said in her on-court interview.

“I’m really happy that I could win it. It’s always tough to play against her. She’s a great player.

She was probably a little bit more tired than me in the second set, but I’ve also had some tough matches at the beginning. Sometimes it’s good, sometimes it’s bad to play long matches because sometimes you get the rhythm, and sometimes you get tired.”

Halep will go for a 21st career WTA tomorrow when she plays Elise Mertens tomorrow after the Belgian’s 7-5 7-6(4) victory over Kristyna Pliskova.

Halep and Mertens have played on four occasions, with Halep winning three of them and in the two clay-court matches the Romanian has only lost six games.

Despite this, the top seed is taking nothing for granted, “The final is always difficult. It doesn’t matter what we did before,” Halep explained.

“I’m going to give my best because I really want to win it, but it’s never easy. I’ll just try to recover until tomorrow and enjoy that I’m going to play another final.”

Tomorrow’s final takes place at 1.30pm local time.
