Angelique Kerber has confirmed her participation for this year’s US Open despite past safety concerns about the event.
The former world number one had recently displayed doubts about playing this year’s US Open due to concerns over COVID-19.
After deciding not to play the ‘Cincinnati’ event, it had looked like the 32 year-old would skip the second grand slam of the season.
However on social media, Kerber has confirmed her participation at this year’s event, “I can’t wait to get back on court and compete,” the German said.
“This is why me and my team have decided to take on the challenge and fly to NYC in a few days. Thanks to the WTA and USTA for their huge effort to make this a safe event.”
The 2016 champion will have a new coach for this year’s event as she reunites with the coach that helped her win her only US Open, Torben Beltz.
Beltz split with Donna Vekic during tennis’ hiatus and will look to inspire Kerber back to her old form as she chases her fourth grand slam.
Kerber’s last tournament was at the Australian Open, where she lost in the fourth round to Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.
