Germany’s Julia Goerges stunned Kiki Bertens for the second time at Grand Slam level in the past two years with a 6-2 6-3 win after 1 hour and 16 minutes to reach the fourth round at Grand Slam level for the second time at the 2019 US Open.
Goerges has reached the fourth round in the past three editions of the US Open after losing in the first round at the US Open in seven of her first nine appearances at Flushing Meadows.
Goerges, who lost her first head-to-head matcches against Bertens, has now drawn level to 2-2 after winning her past two matches against her Dutch rival in 2018 Wimbeldon quarter final in three sets and in today’s match at the US Open.
Goerges, who had to saved a match point in her first round win against Natalia Vikhlyantseva, earned an early break to open up a 2-0 lead after two double faults from Bertens in the first round. Bertens broke straight back, but Goerges earned another break lead with her forehand returns.
Bertens fought back from 15-40 down to earn two break points in the seventh game, but Goerges held her service game at deuce. Goerges converted her third break point chance with a backhand down the line to seal the first set 6-2.
Goerges converted her only break of the second set in the sixth game to open up a 4-2 lead. The German player sealed the win on her fifth match point with her forehand inside the line setting up a fourth round match against Donna Vekic, who beat Yulia Putintseva 6-4 6-1.
