The return of Andreescu
During the first half of 2019, the women’s tour was set on fire by the arrival of Bianca Andreescu. Her rise started in January when she came through qualifying to reach the final of the Auckland Open. Her best performance in a WTA Tournament at the time. Just two months later, she clinched the BNP Paribas Open title in Indian Wells. Stunning Garbine Muguruza, Elina Svitolina and Angelique Kerber on route. Within a three-month period she defeated four top 10 players and rise to a ranking high of 26th before disaster struck.
Since Indian Wells, the 19-year-old has only been able to play one tournament due to a shoulder injury. Reaching the second round of the French Open. Hoping to regain her momentum, Andreescu returns to action at the Rogers Cup to the delight of the home fans.
“Every tournament I go into, I want to win it. I know it’s my first tournament back after injury, but I’ve played a lot this year, so I think I still have a lot of momentum,” Andreescu told reporters in Toronto. “I’m just going to go out there and give my best. Give 100% on the court, and … the crowd, hopefully, is supporting me, which is going to help a lot.”
Ironically, she will play compatriot Eugenie Bouchard in her first match. They are two of only three Canadian women to reach the main draw this year. The other is wild card entrant Leylah Annie Fernandez, who won the French Open girls’ title back in June.
“We know each other very well, we’ve practised many times together so I know it’s going to be a tough (match) and I’m sure there’s going to be a huge crowd that night.” Andreescu previewed of her first round match.
