Canada has a new star
Playing in just her fourth WTA main draw, expectations were low for 18-year-old Bianca Andreescu at the ASB Classic. Nevertheless, she won over the hearts of the New Zealand crowd with an emphatic performance that saw her achieve back-to-back wins over Caroline Wozniacki and Venus Williams. Becoming the first qualifier to reach the final of the tournament since 1997. Andreescu came up short in the final after falling in three sets to defending champion Julia Goerges.
“Now that my confidence is pretty up there, hopefully I can take that into my next couple of tournaments,” she said after the final.
“I hope I can get deep into the Australian Open and get my ranking up to where I want to be, which is in the top 50 by the end of the year.”
The exciting aspect about Andreescu was that she didn’t play all the time at her physical best with both leg and back issues bothering her. Raising questions about how good she could become in the future. Now the Canadian will have to deal with being in the limelight of her home country. Although she appears to be taking her recent success in her stride.
“It feels really good, I’m not going to lie,” she said.
“But I’m just trying to stay grounded right now, stay humble and use it to my advantage.”
Andreescu will rise from 152 to 107 when the WTA rankings are updated on Monday.
