Sabalenka continues to blossom
After a breakthrough 2018 season that saw her win two WTA titles, Aryna Sabalenka continues to live up to her rising star status. The 20-year-old Belarusian has kick-off 2019 by winning the Shenzhen Open. Battling back from a set down to defeat Alison Riske in the final.
“To start the season with a title, it gives you more belief in yourself, and hopefully I can do well at the Australian Open,” Sabalenka said.
Known for her powerful hitting and fast serving, Sabalenka is the youngest player currently ranked in the world’s top 20 at 13th. During her young career, she has already scored eight wins over top 10 players with seven on those occurring on a hard court. In September, she reached the fourth round of the US Open in what was her best grand slam performance to date.
As to her goals for the season, Sabalenka is aiming high with a place in the WTA Finals on her mind. Only the eight highest ranked women in the world will qualify for the season-ending event.
“I really want to go to the WTA Finals. Last year, I didn’t get in there. This year I’m going to do everything to go there, especially because we’re playing in China.” She said.
“I like to play here and I will do my best to go.”
Sabalenka will return to action at the Sydney International where she faces a mouth-watering first round clash against Petra Kvitova.
