Whilst the career of players such as Zverev are just starting, others are coming to an end. Spanish veteran David Ferrer has confirmed that 2019 will be his farewell tour. The 36-year-old has won 27 ATP titles during his career and has finished in the year-end top 10 seven times (2007, 2010-2015).

“I like tennis very much and I will be linked to it one way or another in the future.” Ferrer told atpworldtour.com about his post-retirement plans.
“But right now, I’ve been travelling around the world for 18 years without stopping and it’s time to slow down a bit. I want to be at home with my wife and my son.”

Ferrer has already outlined his final tournaments before he exits the tour. Over the coming months he will play at events in Perth (Hopman Cup), Auckland, Buenos Aires, Acapulco and, Barcelona. Then he aims to play his final match at the Mutua Madrid Open in May. Bringing an end to his 18-year career.

“He is the greatest fighter, maybe, that we have ever seen in tennis.”  – Zverev on Ferrer following their clash at the Hopman Cup on Sunday.

Feliciano Lopez is another player likely to bid farewell in 2019. The former world No.12 has won six titles on the ATP Tour with his biggest occurring at The Queen’s Club in 2017. He has also played in 67 consecutive grand slam main draws since the 2002 French Open.

“I would like to play next year (2019) and if everything goes normal it will be my last year,” Lopez told Spanish radio station Onda Cero.
“My idea is to finish my race by being competitive and not dragging myself down the tracks.”
