Another tournament of shockers?
At the Wimbledon championships, all of the top 10 seeds failed to reach the fourth round of the tournament. Will the same happen in New York?
Given the openness of the women’s tour, it is a possibility with some tense first round matches. Halep faces Kaia Kanepi in her opening match, who reached the quarter-finals of the tournament last year. Venus Williams will have to work hard to see off Svetlana Kuznetsova. Carolina Garcia faces former top 10 player Johanna Konta and Ostapenko will lock horns with Andrea Petkovic.
“Definitely everyone from Top 10 can win this tournament. Every match is a tough one. I played last week and the first round was tough. I did three sets.” Halep commented about the open field on the women’s tour.
I don’t feel that myself is up [here] and all the others are somewhere down [there]. Everybody is even, and I try to win my matches when I step on the court.”
In last year’s tournament Stephens became the first unseeded player to win the women’s title since 2009.
The US Open draw will get underway on Monday.
