Two time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova has taken to the court for the first time since she was stabbed in an off the court incident in her home in Prostejov. The former World No.2 has not played since 2016 after the incident which left her requiring surgery to repair nerves and tendons.
Kvitova – “I am in Monaco and guess what? I’m back on the tennis court, hitting with some proper balls.”
Kvitova was stabbed during the off-season during a home invasion robbery. The 2011 and 2014 Wimbledon champion had been told by doctors that she would not be able to play in the first half of the season. However, her name appeared in Roland Garros entry lists, and the news that she is now on court practising again will give hope that she will indeed be able to make an earlier than expected recovery.
Despite the fact that she is back on court, she still faces an uphill task to be ready for Roland Garros but it does give hope that she may yet be able to play at Wimbledon.
