World No.1 Andy Murray will play in the Aegon Championships at the Queen’s Club for the rest of his career following the signing of a high value deal.

Under the new deal, Murray is set to receive an appearance fee in the range of £700,000 every year, according to figures provided by the Daily Mail. This figure equates to over a third of the prize money, which is offered from the tournament.

It has also been reported that officials tried to tie Murray into conducting a series of promotional activities to encourage tennis at a ‘grassroots level’, but an agreement has so far failed to be made.

“I’ve always loved playing the event and I’m really happy to know that I will play at Queen’s for the rest of my career,” said Murray. “My first ATP World Tour match-win came at Queen’s in 2005, so for it to become by far the most successful tournament of my career is a great feeling. Looking at the names that have won the tournament four times – some of the best players ever – winning it five times means a lot to me.”

The Aegon Championships takes place in London at the Queen’s Club. The grass court tournament, which is categorized as a ATP 500 tournament, takes place in the build-up to the Wimbledon championships and is currently in its 113th year.

Murray has won the title a record five times between 2009-2016. His most recent victory saw him defeat Milos Raonic in three sets in a final which was repeated two weeks later at the Wimbledon Championships. Murray’s 2016 win at Queen’s attracted 3.7 million viewers on the BBC (not counting other media platforms/broadcasters).

On top of Murray’s pledge, the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) has also agreed to broadcast the tournament until at least 2024.

“To know that Andy will play at The Queen’s Club for the rest of his career and that the BBC will cover it every step of the way is a huge boost in what is an exciting and important year for the Aegon Championships with our stadium capacity increasing by 30%.” Tournament director Stephen Farrow said.

This year’s Aegon Championships will see an increase in their seating capacity on centre court from 6,492 seats to over 9000. The tournament will take place between June 19th – June 25th.
