Twitter Erupts As Juan Martin Del Potro Ends Title Drought In Stockholm

Juan Martin Del Potro won his first ATP world tour title for two years after he beat Jack Sock 7-5 6-1 in the final of IF Stockholm Open.

The IF Stockholm Open reached its conclusion on Sunday, as sixth seed and last year’s finalist Jack Sock took on Juan Martin Del Potro in the final. Both men held comfortably at the start of the match, with both players keeping their cards close to their chest. The first break point opportunity was earnt by the Argentinian in the seventh game, however Sock stayed resilient and held to remain ahead in the set. Nevertheless, the American’s determination was broken in the 11th game, as Del Potro broke to 15 to lead 6-5. As a result the world number 63 would use his big serve to hold and grab the first set 7-5.

Del Potro continued his Momentum into the second set as he broke three times and won 90% of his 1st service points. The one-sided performance ultimately lead to the victory and Del Potro’s first ATP world tour title of the season. As a result, he has joined the winner’s circle for the first time in two years.

After his win Del Potro was clearly delighted with his performance. “It’s a great win for me. I didn’t expect to win this trophy at this time of my career after two years without playing.” Del Potro said during the award ceremony. “I think Jack (Sock) has played a fantastic tournament and he deserved to win as well.”

Del Potro also talked about winning a trophy for the first time since January 2014. “I feel wonderful. I’m so happy to win another title after three surgeries on my left wrist.” The delighted Argentine said. “There has been really tough moments during this break. During last year I was really close to quitting tennis in December and now I have a trophy, it’s amazing for me.”

Support by his army of fans on social media, del Potro is set to rise to 42nd in the world rankings and reclaim the Argentine No.1 position. The achievements of the former US Open champion in Stockholm was celebrated by numerous people across Twitter.
