Andy Murray edged out Grigor Dimitrov 6-4 7-6(2) on Sunday to win his first China Open.

The Scotsman made his intentions clear from the very start as he broke the Bulgarian in the very first game. He only got stronger as he won 88% of his first serve points to continue his momentum as he grabbed the first set 6-4.

In the second set he broke again in the fifth game to grab the advantage and seemingly cruise through the match. However Dimitrov showed the same grit that earnt him a place in the final and broke back to love to level the set at 5-5. As a result it went to a tiebreak, in which Murray dominated to take the match in under two hours and grab the 40th title of his career.

After the match Murray praised his second serve, which has often been his weakness. But my second serve tonight was probably the best part of my game. A lot of the unreturned serves came off second serves. Considering the conditions were fairly cold, I was still serving over a hundred miles an hour on some second serves. I felt using good variation on that shot, so I didn’t give him a chance to really attack me there and that was probably the thing that I did best tonight.”

This win means Andy Murray has clinched his fifth title of the season and has momentum heading into next week’s Shanghai Rolex Masters.

In other news Rafael Nadal and Pablo Carreno Busta defeated Jack Sock and Bernard Tomic for the doubles pair. The Spanish pair won 6-7(6) 6-2 10-8. Nadal and Carreno Busta individually have now won two doubles titles each in 2016.
