Alexander Zverev Shocked Stan Wawrinka 6-2 3-6 7-5 in the final of St.Petersburg to win his maiden ATP World Tour title.
The world number 27 used his powerful backhand to grab the early advantage to advance to a 4-2 lead. Additionally the German continued his tactic to go down the line, which as a result paid off as he broke again to take the first set 6-2. However the current US Open champion refused to go down lightly as he used his powerful ground strokes to break in the third game to take a 2-1 lead. Subsequently both men held serve as the world number three took the second set 6-3.
Similarly in the third set Wawrinka broke early in the third to lead 2-0. The three time grand slam champion showed passion, as he was looking to become the first Swiss man since Marc Rosset in 1999 to win the title in St.Petersburg. Nevertheless Zverev was determined to win his maiden title and broke back in the fifth game to get back on serve. There was no break of serve until the 11th game where the German teenager over powered Wawrinka to break the Swiss resistance. The German would hold to win his maiden ATP World Tour title. As a result Wawrinka’s finals winning streak of 11 came to an abrupt end. Zverev will now move up to a new career high of 24 in the world rankings, and also becomes the first teenager since Marin Cilic to win an ATP world tour title.
Meanwhile in the doubles event Dominic Inglot and Henri Kontinen won the doubles event by defeating Andre Begemann and Leander Paes 4-6 6-3 12-10 in the champions tiebreak. As a result it is Kontinen’s fifth title of the season, while it is Inglot’s second title of his 2016 campaign.
