With the removal of Serena Williams, some American media outlets had already written off the women’s final before it even began. Those that did was proved wrong in what was one of the most competitive women’s finals in recent times in the tournament.
In a two-hour battle between Angelique Kerber and Karolina Pliskova, tennis fans was treated to a impressive display from both women with a series of world class shots, first pumps and gruelling rallies. It was an encounter where both players earned a high amount of respect from the crowd at the 23,000 capacity Arthur Ashe stadium.
The victor in the final was Kerber, who closed out the match 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. The win underlined the German’s position as the new world No.1 and gifted her the second major title of the year after the Australian Open.
“It’s just amazing, I’ve won my second grand slam within one year.” An emotional Kerber said during her trophy ceremony.
“This is the best year in my career. It is incredible because to play here (New York) is where everything started in 2011 and now I’m standing here five years later with the trophy. It means so much to me.”
Kerber now leads the world rankings by 1680 points.
