4) Stan Wawrinka Shines

Stan Wawrinka is a player that likes to play on big occasions and New York was no exception. Saving a match point in the third round against Great Britain’s Dan Evans, the Swiss player battled his way to a final showdown against Novak Djokovic. It was a meeting that intrigued the tennis community. Wawrinka had only defeated the world No.1 four times in their 24 previous encounters, but did come out on top in their clash at the 2015 French Open.

It was destined to be a repeat of their French clash as Wawrinka recovered from a set down to defeat Djokovic in four sets with the help of some sublime movement and his 46 winners.

“My goal is to give everything I have to be the best I can,” Wawrinka said in his trophy ceremony.
“I never had a goal to win a Grand Slam but I am trying as best I can. Match after match I was playing better.”

Becoming the oldest man to win the US Open since 1970, Wawrinka has now won his past 11 finals on the ATP Tour. It is an achievement that has earned him great admiration from Djokovic.

“He plays best in the big matches and definitely deserves to be mentioned in the mix of top players,” said Djokovic.
