3) Eric Butorac plays his last match
This year’s tournament saw the ending of doubles specialist Eric Butorac’s career. The 35-year-old achieved a ranking high of 17th in the doubles in 2011 and was the runner-up at the 2014 Australian Open with South Africa’s Raven Klaasen.
Ironically, it was Klassen who ended Butorac’s career. In the first round, he and his partner, Scott Lipsky, crashed out in straight sets to Klassen and Rajeev Ram. Butorac also played in the mixed doubles with Hungary’s Timea Babos, losing in the second round.
“As an American to finish at the US Open is perfect,” the 35-year-old said.
Ending his career with 18 doubles titles on the ATP Tour, the American will now be working for the USTA. On October 1st he becomes the Director of Professional Tennis Operations and Player Relations.
