Top players Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal will headline nominations in next weekend’s upcoming Davis Cup Semi-finals and World Group Play-Offs.
Wimbledon champion Murray will lead Great Britain into their second successive Davis cup Semi-Final. He will be joined by Kyle Edmund, Dan Evans and Jamie Murray. Britain’s team looks strong as Edmund and Evans recently beat top quality opposition to reach the third and fourth round of the US Open. They will face an Argentina team which includes a resurgent Juan Martin Del Potro, who won a silver medal at the Olympics. He is joined by Leonardo Mayer, Federico Delbonis and Guido Pella. Argentina had to beat Poland and Italy to reach this stage, while Great Britain beat Japan and Serbia to make the last four.
In the other Semi-final Croatia will play France in Zadar on an indoor hard court. Croatia remains unchanged from the side that beat USA, meaning former US open champion Marin Cilic joins Borna Coric, Ivan Dodig and Marin Draganja in the team. France will bring in Jo-Wilfred Tsonga, Gael Monfils and reigning Wimbledon and US Open doubles champions Pierre-Hughes Herbert and Nicolas Mahut, although Lucas Pouille will make selection hard for Yannick Noah, after his deep US Open run this week.
These are not the only important Davis cup ties happening next weekend as the eight World Group Play off ties will also be taking place on the 16th-18th September. Leading the nominations is Rafael Nadal, who will be leading the line for Spain as they travel to India for a place in the World group for the first time since 2014. He will be joined by David Ferrer and Roland Garros doubles champions Feliciano Lopez and Marc Lopez. India has chosen Saketh Mynemi, Ramkumar Ramanathan, Leander Paes and Rohan Bopanna for their tie in New Delhi.
Also other ties see a young Switzerland team lead by Henri Laaksonen play Uzbekistan away on clay in Tashkent. Belgium will play Brazil in a fascinating tie, with David Goffin, Bruno Soares and Marcelo Melo starring for their respective countries. Nick Kyrgios will lead Australia into battle against Slovakia on grass in Sydney. Canada will host Chile in Halifax, Kazakhstan will travel to Moscow to play Russia. A young Polish team will play Germany on clay in Berlin, the Poles could miss Jerzy Janowicz while Germany could miss Alexander Zverev. And finally Kei Nishikori will star for Japan in Osaka against a slightly weakened Ukrainian team.
