Richard Gasquet – Karl Edmund
After being blighted by a back injury in recent week’s, Richard Gasquet returns to the tour just in time for the US Open. In his preparation, the Frenchman reached the quarter-finals in Winston-Salem, before bowing out in straight sets to Australia’s John Millman. The loss was disappointing, but not surprising for a player that has been out of action for five weeks.
“I hadn’t played in five weeks this summer (after being injured at Wimbledon) and physically it was very difficult.” Gasquet said after his quarterfinal loss.
His first round opponent will be rising star Kyle Edmund, a player known for his blistering forehand winners. The South African-born Brit has enjoyed a mixed season with a series of disappointing losses during the summer. Nevertheless, Edmund has the skills and ability to trouble a recovering Gasquet and a shock win is not out of the question.
It will be the first meeting between the two players on the tour.
