Petra Kvitova – Jelena Ostapenko
There was no doubt that a sense of anxiety struck the Kvitova camp when they found out that she would be facing Jelena Ostapenko in the opening round. The two-time Wimbledon champion has already played the 19-year-old twice this year and lost in both of them.
At the Doha Open Kvitova took the first set before being blown away by the Latvian player. Then a couple months later she suffered a similar experience on the grass at the Birmingham International.
It isn’t all bad news for Kvitova. Leading up to New York, she has enjoyed a solid sequence of results by reaching the semifinals at the Rio Olympics and has reached the final in New Haven this week. In comparison, Ostapenko has only won two matches at her last three tournaments.
It is unclear as to which player will have the edge their upcoming clash. Kvitova has the better form, but Ostapenko has the game and confidence to upset the Czech player. The only guarantee is that this match will be another tense encounter.
