TENNIS – Andy Murray beat Mischa Zverev 6-2 6-2 in 75 minutes in his opening match on clay at the Munich Open. The Scotsman has played his first match since getting marriage on 11th April in Dunblane. This match has also marked his first match under his new coach Jonas Bjorkman Diego Sampaolo
Murray cruised past Mischa Zverev (the older brother of German rising star Alexander Zverev) opening up a 4-0 lead in the first four games of the opening set en route to his unchallenged 6-2. Murray saved six break point chances in the second set, including three in the final game. Murray broke serve for 5-2 but he faced three break points in the final game in the but Zverev failed to convert them. Murray closed out the second set on serve for 6-2
Murray also reached the semifinal in the doubles tournament with Dutchman Rojer.
Murray will play against Lukas Rosol in the third round. The Czech player beat for the first time in his career Sergiy Stakhovskiy 7-5 6-2 after 86 minutes in a match interrupted by rain as Rosol was serving for 4-4 after breaking back.
“It wasn’t too easy. He had a different style to most other players and it was tricky playing against a left-hander but I got the important points My forehand went better than my backhand, but it was a good first match for me”, said Murray.
Murray has reached two semifinals at the Roland Garros but he has not played in a clay final yet. In his previous five semifinals on clay he lost to Rafa Nadal four times and to Novak Djokovic once.
In the other matches of the BMW Open Dominic Thiem upset Italian Fabio Fognini with 6-3 6-0 in just 57 minutes.
Thiem, who reached the quarter final in Miami but was knocked out in the first round in Monte-Carlo and Barcelona, broke serve twice in the first set. He recovered one break but Thiem broke again. Fognini broke back but Thiem sealed the win with another break. Thiem recovered from 0-40 on his serve before winning the second set with a bagel.
Gerald Muller was leading 4-1 against last week’s Barcelona runner-up Pablo Andujar when the Spanish player withdrew from the match after just 27 minutes because of a right hip injury.
Istanbul Open: Dimitrov cruises to the quarter finals
Grigor Dimitrov cruised past Andrey Golubev with 6-3 6-2 after converting on three of his 11 break point chances
Pablo Cuevas fought back from losing the first set to edge past Teymuraz Gabashvili with 4-6 6-4 6-4 after two hours. Thomas Bellucci overcame Denis Istomin with 7-6 (7-4) 6-3.
Estoril ATP 250: Garcia Lopez edged past Anderson
Guillermo Garcia Lopez, winner in Zagreb last February and in Bucharest last week, edged past Kevin Anderson 6-4 3-6 6-1.
Garcia Lopez recovered from 15-40 in the fifth game to break serve en route to winning the first set with 6-4. Anderson fought back taking a 4-1 lead but he had to save four break point chances Anderson lost four consecutive games to lose the third set 6-1.
Borna Coric edged Rui Machado 6-4 5-7 6-1 to set up the quarter final against Garcia Lopez.
Giles Muller fought back from a set down to battle past Albert Montanes with 4-6 6-3 7-6 (9-7) in two hours after saving three match points Muller will face Pablo Carreno Busta who dropped just three games in his 6-1 6-2 win over lucky loser Vega Hernandez
