Donald Young advanced to the second round where he will meet Andy Murray after his first round opponent Yen Hsun Lu was forced to withdraw because of a neck injury when he was losing 1-5.
Nicolas Almagro battled past Sergiy Stakhovskiy 6-3 6-7 (3-7) 6-4 setting up a second round match against his compatriot Rafa Nadal. Almagro, who reached the quarter finals in Miami in 2010, fended off five of the six break points he faced.
Jack Sock beat Go Soeda 6-3 6-4 setting up a second round match against Fabio Fognini. Sock and Vasek Pospisil teamed up last week in their triumph over Fognini and Simone Bolelli in the Indian Wells doubles final.
South Korean teenager Hyeon Chung, who lost the Wimbledon Junior final against Italian Gianluigi Quinzi in 2013, beat Marcel Granollers 6-0 4-6 6-4 in his first match on the ATP circuit
Australian qualifier James Duckworth edged past Damir Dzumhur 6-3 3-6 6-3 setting up a second round match against Fernando Verdasco.
Austrian Dominic Thiem rallied from 0-3 in the second set to edge Diego Schwartzmann 7-6 7-5.
