TENNIS WIMBLEDON TENNIS – Top seed Williams made short work of Scheepers in less than an hour, 6-1 6-1 to move through to the 3rd round of Wimbledon where she will face Alize Cornet (23) for a place in the Round of 16.
Serena Williams (1) is looking very impressive so far in singles at the 2014 Wimbledon championships. The five-champion came up against South African Chanelle Scheepers for a place in the 3rd round. Williams, known for her fiery temperament was rather subdued and silent on court, showing no signs of histrionics as she swiftly dismissed Scheepers 6-1 6-1 in 49 minutes. This was a far cry from the Williams who was on court with her elder sister, Venus Williams, yesterday for doubles. The younger Williams looked flustered, missing easy shots at net and spraying balls from the back of the court. It was complete contrast today as she showed why she is heavily favoured to win this title for a 6th time. “I do like to feel great in the beginning, but I think it’s also important not to peak too soon, keep working on your game, always have room for improvement. I think in general I always have room for improvement in my game. I feel there’s some things I still want to work on to hopefully stay in the tournament,” Williams said after the match.
Williams came out firing as she was up 4-0 and it was barely 15 minutes into the match. Scheepers was able to get herself on the scoreboard for 1-4. However, Williams remained undeterred and broke Scheepers in the 7th game for the set 6-1 in 25 minutes. The 2nd set was much the same, as Williams again raced out to a 4-0 lead before Scheepers was able to get on the scoreboard for 1-4. Williams would then win the next two games to close out the match 6-1 6-1. This was a very impressive match for the American as she won 83% of her 1st serve points and 64% on her 2nd serve. She dropped only 9 points on serve total for the match She had 26 winners including 8 aces and no double faults.
Williams will next play Alize Cornet (23) in the 3rd round. Cornet beat Williams earlier this year in the semifinals of Dubai. “Cornet, she does everything good. That’s why she was able to get a good win off of me. She never gives up, she’s a big fighter. She gets a lot of balls back. But I’m ready. It’s time for me to step up my game and do what I know I can do and do what I’m best at … It represents a new challenge for me. It makes me realize, Okay, I have to work hard if I want to be able to get a win.”
