After a week spent in hospital, Lucie Safarova was finally able to go back home last Sunday. She had been suffering an infectious disease that caused her prolonged fever and neck pain. It is still unclear, however, when she will be able to actually start playing again. She withdrew from the Premier Tournament held in Tokyo this week, but she is still set to play at the 2015 Wuhan Open, a Premier 5-level event, next week.

Safarova is having the best season of her career so far: she reached the French Open final, after which she finally broke into the top 10, and the New Haven final, losing to Petra Kvitova. She also won her first Premier-level event in Dubai, defeating two top 10 players and Vika Azarenka en route to the title.
She’s now number 5 in the race to Singapore, but the road to qualify to the WTA Finals is not an easy one, as five of the eight available spots are still up to grab and many players are only within 2-300 points from each other.
We’ll see in the upcoming weeks if the Czech player will be able to fully recover from the disease and will manage to cease her season with a well-deserved spot among the top-eight players who will fly to Singapore.
