TENNIS WTA MONTREAL – Maria Sharapova rallied from a set down to overcome Garbine Muguruza in three sets with 4-6 6-3 6-1 reeling off 12 of the final 13 games in a re-match of this year’s Roland Garros quarter final won by the Russian player in three sets with 1-6 7-5 6-1. Diego Sampaolo
Sharapova dropped serve to love in the first game after two double faults. Muguruza held serve for 2-0. Sharapova clawed her way back to draw level to 2-2. She saved four break point chances before holding serve for 3-2. In the seventh game Muguruza created three break point chances but Sharapova saved all of them. Sharapova made a double fault to drop serve to go down 3-4. The Spaniard fended off a break point before closing out the first set when Sharapova hit a forehand into the net after 61 minutes.
Muguruza broke serve to take a 2-1 lead in the third game of the second set but Sharapova fought back from 15-40 down to break back to draw level to 2-2. At 30-30 in the fifth game Sharapova earned a game point with an ace and held serve for 3-2 before breaking with a forehand return down the line. Sharapova served out the second set to love.
Sharapova broke serve with a forehand down the line in the opening game of the third set before pulling away to 4-0. Muguruza held serve to win her first game of the decider but Sharapova won the next two games to close out the match.
