Jannik Sinner has pulled the plug on his season following consultations with his medical team and will undergo ‘a course of treatment’ for a right knee injury that has been bothering him in recent weeks.
The world No.1 hasn’t played on the Tour since winning Wimbledon in July due to his knee. Concerns have been raised about Sinner’s injury after he was forced to withdraw from numerous tournaments, raising questions about when he will return to action.
“Hello everyone, I would like to give you a little update,” the world No.1 said in a video posted on social media.
“Me, together with the doctors, have decided that I need a course of treatment for my knee, which means that the 2026 season is officially over.
“The last couple of years, especially the ending in Turin, gave me so many beautiful feelings and emotions, which this year is going to be way different, but at the moment I also need to think about my long-term career, so I will do everything possible to get back a hundred percent.
“I will thank you already in advance for your support and hope to see you very, very soon on court again. Ciao ciao!”
Sinner hasn’t specified what the exact injury is. In a statement issued to the media, his team said he will undergo treatment for inflammation in his knee. He will then have to undergo rehabilitation before aiming to return to action at the start of next season.
The Italian is certain to lose his No. 1 ranking before the year ends. He will be unable to defend his titles at the Vienna Open, Paris Masters and ATP Finals. The player set to overtake Sinner is Alexander Zverev, whom he beat in his last match, the Wimbledon final. Zverev is set to become the first German man to top the rankings since Boris Becker in 1991.
Despite ending his season early, Sinner has still managed to win six titles this year with a 44-3 record. He has won five Masters 1000s and one Grand Slam title since January.
The announcement comes just over a month after Sinner’s rival, Carlos Alcaraz, returned to the Tour following a wrist injury that sidelined him from April until early September. The two have played each other only once this year, at the Monte Carlo Masters.
