Joao Fonseca overcame Casper Ruud 7-5 7-6(8) 5-7 6-2 to book his place in the Roland Garros quarter-finals.
The Brazilian was bold, brave and consistent as he battled past the Norwegian in an epic fourth round match.
It was disappointment for Ruud as the wait for his first Grand Slam title goes on.
As for Fonseca, the 28th seed will face Jakub Mensik in the last eight after he defeated Andrey Rublev in five sets.
Both players started the match with attacking intent as Fonseca looked to dictate the points with the forehand.
Meanwhile, Ruud transition from defence to attack effortlessly and was able to put the pressure on the Brazilian.
Ruud displayed that his forehand can do damage but it was also his worst enemy at times as it got him into a spot of bother in the fourth game.
Some poor decision-making from Ruud allowed Fonseca to build some early momentum as he created three break points but the Norwegian showed his experience to save the break points and hold for 2-2.
There was tension on both sides of the net with so much on the line and that was evident towards the end of the set.
Some bad decisions mixed with poor shot selection and execution from both players allowed the other back into the match.
Both players’ smashes wasn’t the best either as neither player could take their chances.
However, the dropshots and forehand from Ruud was slightly worse and let him down in the crucial moment as he was broken in the 12th game and conceded the set, 7-5.
Fonseca continued the momentum into the second as he broke comfortably for a 2-0 lead with some really poor serving from Ruud allowing Fonseca to fire away on the forehand side.
The Norwegian did manage to redeem himself straight away as some brutal forehand returns did damage to the Fonseca serve as he broke back comfortably.
There was a feeling in the middle of the set that the momentum was shifting as Ruud started to take control of the set especially with the forehand.
Ruud couldn’t make the passage of play count as he wasted two break points in the seventh game.
Towards the end of the set there was missed smashes, drama and shot-making of the highest order making for captivating viewing.
The 15th seed felt that he should of equaled the match at one set all if it wasn’t for the umpire getting a line call wrong.
Nevertheless, Ruud did well to save two set points as he forced a second set tiebreak.
At the start of the tiebreak Ruud asserted control and dominance as the forehand did more damage with the Norwegian taking a 5-2 lead.
When it really mattered Ruud was unable to make the pressure count and couldn’t convert set point.
Eventually Fonseca took his opportunity with blistering ground-strokes as he took a two set lead.
The first two sets took just over two hours and 15 minutes with it now being clear that both players were adopting a slightly different approach.
Both players were showing a willingness to be aggressive and shorten the points which actually helped Ruud establish some consistency in the contest.
There was some good overall play from Ruud but needed to rely on his serve under pressure to get him out of trouble.
Two break points were saved from Ruud as he targeted the end of the set as his opportunity to break.
A consistent yet proactive return game saw Ruud break for the set in the 12th game as Fonseca crumbled under the pressure with the forehand producing errors.
Would this be the beginning of a comeback for Ruud? No it wouldn’t.
It was a testament to Fonseca’s concentration, maturity and quality that he got right back on with the job at hand.
Any disappointment was left behind as he was aggressive from the first game and comfortably broke at the start of the fourth set.
The Norwegian tried to mount pressure on Fonseca’s charge but another break for a 4-1 lead secured the set.
Some more big serving sealed Fonseca’s place in a first Grand Slam quarter-final as he soaked in the joy of a four set win.
As for Ruud it’s disappointment as he saw this as an opportunity to win his first Grand Slam title but leaves the tournament at the fourth round stage.
Fonseca will now face Jakub Mensik for a place in the semi-finals on Tuesday.
